It’s 2019! Yaaaay! Your feeds and mailbox are full of New Year, New You articles. You’ve made your resolutions… resolved not to make any. Even if you decided not to make resolutions, you can’t help but to look back on last year and think about what you accomplished and what you want to accomplish in 2019. If you’re like many other people, changing your job or career is on your list of things that you’d like to accomplish. Lucky you! I’m here to help!
Before you start firing off resumes with the fervor of Kimmy Schmidt, first take some time to think through a couple of questions:
- What do you want to change?
Do you want to change your job or do you want to change your career? Do you want to move into a different field within your current industry?
Knowing the answer to those questions will make the change much easier because you’ll be able to be more focused. You’ll have a better idea about whom you’ll need to speak to and what skills and knowledge you’ll gain, improve, and/or promote to reach your target position
2. Why do you want to make that change?
This is a part that a lot of people skip over or they only think about it on a superficial level. Sure, you may want more money or a better work/life balance but those things are rarely enough to keep you disciplined when you don’t feel like sending out that networking email or work on your Linkedin profile.
Nope. You will have to dig deeper to get to your real why. Do you want to do work that’s important to you and makes a different in the world? Do you want to make more money because you want to provide financial security for yourself and your family? Do you want to make an impact in your community? All of those are valid reasons and remembering them when you don’t feel like putting in the work will give you that extra motivation you’ll need to keep going.
Use those 2 questions as launching pads for your career and job change. Their answers will provide you with much-needed guidance and will be the backbone of your strategy.
