Don't worry. It's common to feel a bit lost or unfulfilled in your career at some point, especially when you’re mid-career. Let's call it a "mid-career check-in" – a time to look at where you are in your career and figure out if it's time to switch things up.

Grab a drink, settle in, and let's have an honest convo about some signs that might indicate you're ready for a career change:

1️⃣ The Sunday Night Blues
We all get them sometimes, but if you're consistently dreading Monday morning, that's a red flag.

What to do: Instead of simply feeling bad about it, try to figure out what exactly is causing the dread. Is it a particular task, a difficult co-worker, or a lack of challenge in your role? Once you know what's bothering you, you can start to explore solutions.

2️⃣ Ennui
Do you feel bored or uninspired by your work most of the time? Life is too short to spend it doing something that doesn't excite you.

What to do: Think about what kind of work would truly make you happy. Maybe it's time to explore new projects within your current company, or perhaps you need to consider a career change altogether.

3️⃣ Feeling Like a Fake aka Imposter Syndrome
Do you secretly worry that you're not good enough at your job, even though you've achieved success?

What to do: Focus on your accomplishments (even the small ones!) and the value you bring to your team. Talk to a trusted friend or mentor for reassurance and support. Consider taking a course or attending a conference to boost your confidence and skills.

4️⃣ Comparing Your Career Path With Others’ Career Paths
Are you constantly comparing yourself to your colleagues or friends, especially when you’re browsing social media and you see their posts? It's easy to fall into this trap, but it won't make you happier.

What to do: Remember, everyone's career path is different. Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your own progress and what you can do to reach your own goals. Take also a break from social media.

5️⃣ Daydreaming of a Different Life
Do you find yourself fantasizing about quitting your job and doing something completely different?

What to do: Don't ignore these daydreams! They’re  telling you something important about what you truly want out of life. Take some time to explore your interests and passions.

6️⃣ Feeling Burned Out
Are you feeling exhausted, both mentally and physically? Can't seem to focus or get motivated?

What to do: Prioritize your well-being. Take some time off, set boundaries at work, and do things you enjoy outside of work. If you're feeling overwhelmed, consider talking to a therapist or counselor. Heck, do that anyway!

7️⃣ Procrastination Station
Do you find yourself putting off tasks, missing deadlines, and struggling to get things done?

What to do: Break tasks down into smaller, more manageable chunks. Set realistic deadlines for yourself. If you need help staying organized, try using a planner or calendar. You can also get some ideas from another post that I wrote, “5 Hacks to Own Your Time, Not Let It Own You.”

8️⃣ Feeling Isolated
Do you feel disconnected from your colleagues and friends? Like you don't belong?

What to do: Make an effort to connect with people both at work and outside of work. Join a club, take a class, or volunteer for a cause you care about. Spending time with others can help you feel more connected and supported.

9️⃣ Regretting the Past
Are you dwelling on past mistakes or missed opportunities? We all have regrets, but it's important to focus on the present and the future.

What to do: Learn from your past experiences, but don't let them hold you back. Focus on what you can do now to create a career and a life that you love. Your future self will thank you.

🔟 The "Who Am I?" Question
Are you feeling lost and unsure of who you are or what you want out of life? This is a normal part of the human experience, especially during times of transition.

WHO AM I?

What to do: Take some time to reflect on your values, interests, and goals. Talk to a trusted friend or family member about what you're going through. Consider seeking guidance from a career counselor or therapist.

Remember, a mid-career check-in is not a failure, but an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. It's a chance to reassess your priorities, explore new possibilities, and create a career that truly fulfills you.

Talk to you soon,

Lauren
