We’ve all been there.
Maybe you feel like you’re on the right path, pursuing the right goals, and heading in the right direction….
And suddenly, it’s there.
Staring you in the face.
Total fear. And the thought: What am I thinking?! Maybe I can’t do this after all.
It’s totally normal to have moments of self-doubt, but it’s important not to let it hold you back from achieving your dreams.
Sadly, that’s what a lack of confidence does to many women—and I’m not going to let that happen to you!
Career confidence is crucial for success in the workplace. When you believe in yourself and your abilities, others are more likely to believe in you too. You’re more likely to take on new challenges and achieve your goals.
You’ll be more assertive, take more risks, and make better decisions. Career confidence also helps you handle setbacks with grace and positivity, and keeps you motivated to keep pushing forward.
We all want to feel confident in our careers, but sometimes it can be easier said than done.
There are a lot of challenges that can get in the way of building career confidence, but with a little self-reflection and some practical strategies, you can overcome them and achieve your professional goals.
💭 Fear of failure or making mistakes. It’s natural to be afraid of failure or making mistakes, but if this fear is holding you back from taking risks or pursuing opportunities, it’s time to address it. Remember that mistakes are opportunities for growth and learning. By reframing failure as a chance to improve, you can take more calculated risks and grow your confidence in the process.
💭 Negative self-talk or self-doubt. Negative self-talk and self-doubt can be major roadblocks to career confidence. If you find yourself constantly criticizing yourself or doubting your abilities, try to reframe those thoughts with more positive affirmations. Instead of telling yourself “I’m not good enough,” try “I’m constantly improving and learning.” It may take some practice, but over time you can shift your mindset to one of positivity and self-assurance.
💭 Imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is the feeling that you don’t deserve your success or that you’re a fraud. This is a common challenge for high-achieving women, but it doesn’t have to hold you back. Remember that you got to where you are because of your hard work and talent. Instead of dwelling on your perceived shortcomings, focus on your strengths and accomplishments.
💭 Pressure to meet exceedingly high expectations. You probably hold high expectations for yourself but when those expectations become too high, it can be overwhelming and discouraging. Try to set realistic goals for yourself and break them down into manageable steps. This can help you feel more in control and confident in your ability to achieve your goals.
💭 Not taking the time to acknowledge and celebrate achievements. THIS IS A BIGGIE!!!!! I have run into this issue with almost every single one of my amazing clients. You can be so focused on the next goal that you forget to stop and appreciate what you’ve accomplished. Make a point to celebrate your wins, big and small. This can help you stay motivated and build confidence in your abilities. If you need help figuring out what your accomplishments are, ask around. Undoubtedly, you’ll find that other people will have plenty of examples for you to use.
Here are some tips to get you started.
1. Develop self-awareness and identify your strengths. Take some time to reflect on your strengths and accomplishments. What are you really good at? What are some projects or tasks you’ve excelled at in the past?
Take a look at your strengths, understand your personality and work style, and be honest about what you want from your career. Knowing your strengths can help you feel more confident in your abilities and leverage them in your work
2. Take on challenges and learn new skills. Taking on challenges and learning new skills can also boost your confidence. Whether it’s taking a course, attending a workshop, or simply asking for more responsibility in your current role, acquiring new knowledge and skills can help you feel more capable and confident.
Be sure to take action and set goals. Whether it's as simple as speaking up in a meeting, or as intimidating as pursuing a promotion, stepping outside of your comfort zone can help you grow and feel more confident in your abilities.
3. Build a support system and seek feedback. Building a support system and seeking feedback from colleagues, mentors, or supervisors can also be helpful ways to build your career confidence.
You can build a supportive network by attending career events, seeking out mentorship, or joining professional organizations. Ask for feedback and listen with an open mind. Hearing positive feedback about your work can give you a boost of confidence, while constructive criticism can help you identify areas for improvement and growth.
4. Care for yourself through challenging moments. Let’s be honest: there will be hard moments and probably even some times when you will fail. It’s important to embrace those challenges as a learning opportunity, continues to practice self-care and be kind to yourself.
Taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental health can help you feel more energized, focused, and positive in your work. Reframe failure as a chance to grow and seek out constructive feedback to improve your skills and course of direction. And remember: There’s no comeback without a setback!
5. Visualize and celebrate your successes. Visualizing success is another way to build your career confidence! Creating a vision board, writing down your goals, or practicing visualization exercises can help you envision your future success and keep a clear direction.
Celebrating your wins is important to keep you motivated and remind you that every victory—no matter how small—is important and worth celebrating. Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem.
Having confidence is a key ingredient for success in life and in the workplace. Building your career confidence takes time and effort, but it’s totally worth it in the end. By overcoming these challenges and developing confidence in yourself, you can achieve your professional goals and take control of your career.
